Types of Hardwood Floor

There are two main types of wood floors, solid and engineered. Solid wood floors are the traditional option and are comprised of a single piece of lumber making each floor plank. Solid wood floors have the advantage of being able to be refinished many times, making it last for decades and longer. Each wood plank is nailed to a wood subfloor individually. This means that solid wood floors are not a suitable choice if you have a concrete subfloor. Wood floors are also not recommended for humid environments such as bathrooms and basements. Increased humidity may cause the wood to warp or cupping.

The second option for wood floors is engineered wood. Engineered wood is made of multiple thin layers of compressed wood. It has the advantage of being able to be installed over a variety of different flooring, including wood, tile or linoleum. Engineered wood is snapped together via grooves and not nailed to the subfloor. This allows them to withstand moisture better than solid wood floors.

The biggest differences between solid wood floors and engineered are durability, longevity and cost. Solid wood floors are more durable because they can be refinished so they will last longer but they will also cost more for the initial installation.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing

If you have recently bought a home that has solid hardwood floors that have seen better days, hardwood floor refinishing is a great option. Many homeowners know that this is a task best left to the professionals. Not only will we refinish your hardwood floor, but we can address any repairs, squeaks or gaps.

Hardwood floor refinishing in Orange County involves several steps. The first step our team of professionals will do is remove the baseboards to prevent damage. Next, we will address any required repairs such as gaps, squeaks or damaged floor boards. After the repairs, we will begin to sand. We use a high quality dustless sander to minimize mess. This is a particularly important step. Uneven sanding will cause your hardwood floor to become pitted and potentially damage the wood floor. After everything is sanded and cleaned, we will help you select the perfect color and finish for your floors. Since the hardwood floors are sanded down, any prior stain colors will also be removed. It is a great time to change the color of your flooring. Once the stain is applied and allowed to cure, a protective sealant is applied to give your hardwood flooring more durability.
